PR Card Renewal - Canada

PR Card Renewal

Permanent Residents of Canada must have a valid PR card to re-enter Canada via any commercial carrier such as a plane, bus, train, or boat. Without a valid PR card, you will not be allowed to board.

You may enter Canada without a valid PR card via a land border in a private vehicle or at an airport via private plane, but this is not recommended as it may cause issues with Canadian customs in the future.

Eligibility for PR Card Renewal

You can apply even if you have never had a PR card before.

Urgent PR Card Processing

If you need your PR card urgently, you may qualify for expedited processing under specific conditions, such as:
✔ Serious illness or a family emergency abroad
✔ The need to prove PR status for work or travel

The government has strict criteria for urgent processing. Contact us to determine if you qualify.

Renewing Your PR Card from Outside Canada

If you live outside Canada full-time, you may still be eligible for PR card renewal if you meet one of the following exemptions:
Living abroad with a Canadian spouse
Working for a Canadian company outside Canada

There are other exemptions as well. If you have spent fewer than 730 days in Canada but believe you qualify, we can help strengthen your application to address absences from Canada.

Humanitarian and Compassionate (H&C) Grounds

If you do not meet the 730-day physical presence requirement, you may still apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) from outside Canada and explain why you couldn’t meet the 730-day requirement.

 Acceptable circumstances include:
Severe illness or injury outside Canada
Death or serious illness of a close family member abroad
Caring for a dependent relative outside Canada

H&C applications require detailed supporting documents. If you believe you qualify, schedule a consultation with us to discuss your options.
